Alpine County is the smallest county in terms of population that only had a total of 1,145 residents based on the 2007 census. Most of the county’s population are living in communities around the Alpines’s mountain. The county is located in the Sierra Nevada, between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park it has a total area of 743 square miles, it is composed of five square miles of water and the huge area island which is 739 square miles. It was established in 1854 during a silver boom and parts have been taking from the area of Calaveras, El Dorado and Tuolumne.

There were 11,000 people residing the county when it was first formed and down to just 1,200 in 1868 as they saw no signs of improvements in the area whose major source of living that time was silver mining. After that silver rush period, residents were just focused on ranching, farming and logging.
